About this role

We are looking for someone to join our Marketing and Communications team based at our Hospice in St John’s Wood on a 6-month fixed-term contract. You’ll lead on the creation of a project plan and deliver first-class copy for a variety of channels including print and web to support us in marketing our clinical services to referral partners as well as patients, their families and carers.

As an experienced copywriter, you’ll need to be confident when it comes to overseeing copywriting briefs, and not be afraid to push back for clarification or missing information when needed to keep the project on track.

Your excellent communication and project management skills will be put to good use liaising with your colleagues in the Clinical Service and Fundraising Teams, members of the wider Marketing & Communications Team as well as any external designers and contractors, to make sure all the outputs are delivered to a high standard, on time and on budget.

You will be part of a 3-person Marketing and Communications Team, part of the charity’s wider Fundraising Team (currently 10 people strong). This role will be line-managed by the Snr. Marketing and Communications Manager.

We recognise the benefits of hybrid working, however, we are aware that this is a role which will need to work closely with our colleagues in the Clinical Service Team and will therefore benefit from in-person meetings particularly when compiling initial concepts and briefs. Therefore, we encourage applicants from workers who will be happy to commute to our hospice in St John’s Wood at least for the initial stages of the project.

What are the key duties?

Delivering a first-class copywriting service as part of our Marketing and Communications team:

  • Working alongside Snr. Marketing and Communications Manager and Clinical Service Team Leads to identify content gaps and priorities and draw up a project plan.
  • Responding to briefs quickly and effectively, making sure Clinical Service Teams’ needs are understood and met.
  • Building strong relationships with colleagues across Clinical and Fundraising, ensuring good communication at all times.
  • Offering copy support and advice to colleagues, including editing and proofreading copy produced by other writers.

Ensuring all copy is audience-appropriate and approved by relevant stakeholders:

  • Having a deep understanding of our tone of voice and ensuring all copy complies.
  • Being audience aware – understanding the specific needs of the target audience for each brief and ensuring that the copy is appropriate.
  • Working alongside colleagues in Fundraising to ensure any opportunities for cross-marketing of services and products are identified and optimised.
  • Ensuring all copy is accurate and approved by the relevant stakeholders before going live on the website or being sent to designers.

Working with external resources to provide first-class communications:

  • Providing accurate and approved copy where needed to support the work of external contractors and the wider M&C team.
  • Managing external designers where necessary to ensure deadlines are met and that output is of a high standard. This includes ensuring outputs are accessible and dementia friendly.
  • Working alongside any external resources and the wider M&C team to ensure copy is optimised for search engines and that information can be easily accessed by its intended audience.
  • Ensuring sign-off on outputs from relevant stakeholders before going live on the website or going to print.

Am I the right person for this role?

  • Demonstrable experience of healthcare copywriting in a marketing, publishing or creative agency environment. Ideal candidate would have demonstrable experience of copywriting for a hospice.
  • A relevant degree or copywriting qualification.
  • Exceptional communication skills.
  • Demonstrable experience of adherence to brand guidelines and tone of voice.
  • Strong project management abilities with a track record of delivery.
  • Excellent time management, with experience of working to multiple deadlines at pace.
