Volunteers are at the heart of our hospice. We are always looking for kind and compassionate people to join our dedicated team and help people in our community to live well for longer.
Without our volunteers, we could not provide such high quality care for so many people each year. They help ensure the smooth running of our services, providing support for staff, patients and visitors and helping with vital fundraising activities.
We welcome volunteers from all walks of life, you just need some spare time and enthusiasm! In return you will make new friends, gain skills and build your confidence while letting you play a key role in your community. It can also improve your career prospects and adds invaluable volunteering experience to your CV.
Whether you excel at sorting shop donations, you’d love to enthusiastically cheer on others at the London Marathon or you can be a friendly person to chat to people in the community, we have a volunteer role with your name on it.

You may think that coming into a hospice is all doom and gloom, but it couldn’t be further from the truth at St John’s. We’ve created such a lovely atmosphere here between volunteers and staff, and our patients and their visitors certainly pick up on that.
There are lots of ways you can volunteer with St John’s. From providing support in our Inpatient Unit, being a welcoming face on the reception desk or supporting our fundraising and community engagement by volunteering at our charity shop.
Every single volunteer makes a difference to our hospice and allows us to continue caring for our patients and their loved ones. Learn more about our regular volunteering opportunities below:
Administration volunteers provide essential back up to staff at the hospice, including secretaries, doctors, nurses and the fundraising team, allowing them to focus on their ongoing tasks. This role includes duties such as photocopying and scanning, helping to organise patient files, taking messages, running errands, inputting data and researching.
When supporting the fundraising team, this role can take place remotely. You will be part of a team working hard to raise funds for the hospice and helps by researching potential prospects, identifying key information, contacting local organisations and businesses in the community.
Volunteering for our events and fundraising activities are a fun and exciting way to support the hospice by raising funds. We host regular community events throughout the year and volunteers are a huge help in facilitating these.
Our one-off event volunteers are a huge help particularly throughout the winter festive season, in our cheer squads during challenge events and during our annual Easter Egg Trail. Your actual role will vary greatly but could involve helping to set up and clear away, supervising activities, selling merchandise and tickets, stewarding and being a contact point for information.
We are seeking dedicated volunteers to provide vital support across various areas of our fundraising efforts.
Fundraising administration volunteers will assist with administrative tasks such as preparing thank-you letters and receipts, organising and filing fundraising documents, managing mailings, and responding to donor enquiries. They will also contribute to research and fundraising activities, including identifying potential grants and sponsorships, researching donor prospects, and assisting with grant applications. Additionally, volunteers will play a key role in campaign support by helping with event logistics, promotional activities, and online fundraising platforms.
Volunteers in the Inpatient Unit play a vital role in helping patients and visitors feel cared about, comfortable and relaxed. You would be involved in the day-to-day running of the unit, helping with tasks such as serving meals and refreshments, collecting newspapers, spending time chatting with patients and their loved ones, keeping the kitchen and refreshment areas neat and tidy and much more.
The receptionist is often the first person patients and visitors meet or speak to on the telephone. The welcome, consideration, respect and guidance that the receptionist offers can help ease some of the anxiety and worry people can feel when coming into the Hospice, especially for the first time.
This role is integral to the smooth operation of the Inpatient Unit and your duties would include answering the phone, welcoming and directing all admissions and alerting nursing staff upon their arrival, taking messages and redirecting calls, greeting visitors in a calm manner and arranging refreshments if requested.
Our charity shop, located on St John’s Wood High Street is a vital source of income for the charity through sales of donated items. Our retail volunteers are the backbone of the shop, helping it run smoothly alongside staff while generating vital funds for the hospice. This role is a brilliant way to learn more about sustainable fashion and to give something back to the local community.

Whether it’s a few hours a week or a few times a year, any time that you can give makes a huge difference and helps to keep our hospice running, while allowing us to create more moments of joy for our patients and their loved ones.
