Day services

Our Wellbeing Centre encompasses our belief that hospice care is long-term and holistic – our focus is not only on your physical care but on supporting you and those close to you, to maintain your quality of life, mental health and wellbeing.

Our Wellbeing Centre

At our Wellbeing Centre in St John’s Wood, you can access specialist nursing and medical care, benefit from treatments and therapies, meet with our social workers and take part in workshops and activities. It is also an opportunity to meet other people who are living with life-limiting illness, have lunch and share experiences.

The care we provide at our Wellbeing Centre is tailored to each of our patient's individual needs and we will do all we can to ensure that you are supported physically, mentally, emotionally, practically and spiritually.

To do this, we work as a multi-disciplinary team including doctors and nurses, therapists, social workers, bereavement counsellors, ambulance drivers and volunteers. We will also work closely with other professionals involved in your care such as your GP, district nurse and hospital doctor.

What we can offer you

  • Specialist nursing and medical care to support the monitoring and management of any pain and symptoms you may have. We also provide interventions, such as drug therapy, infusions and blood transfusions.
  • Physio- and occupational therapies to help maintain function and mobility, enabling you to live as independently and fully as possible.
  • Complementary therapies including massage, reflexology, reiki and acupuncture. These can help to promote wellbeing, a sense of relaxation and relieve some of your symptoms. We also extend these therapies to your family members and carers.
  • Emotional and practical support and advice from our social workers, helping with any anxieties or concerns that you or those close to you may have. This includes providing support with benefits, housing or financial matters.
  • Regular creative and physical activities including art, music and movement classes.
  • Transport to the Wellbeing Centre via our ambulance service for patients with reduced mobility or access issues. We are happy to discuss this further with you upon your referral.

Who we care for

We recognise that illness does not discriminate - it affects people regardless of their age, gender, ethnicity, sexuality or beliefs - which is why at St John’s we pride ourselves on creating a safe and inclusive community where our patients are encouraged to be themselves.

We care for any person living with a life-limiting illness - including cardiac, respiratory, or renal conditions, HIV, cancer, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's - and at different stages of their illness.

All of the care we provide is completely free of charge and available to anyone aged 18 or over living within our service catchment area. We do not exclude people who might have learning disabilities, a history of mental health or substance use. We can also support you if you have no fixed abode or limited immigration status.

Patient, Judith, sits in a light blue chair.

“It’s not about dying, it’s about living.”

“When I first started coming here, friends would say to me, ‘Why would you want to go to a hospice? All they talk about is people who are dying.’

But I explain to them it’s not like that at St John’s. We have activities and there’s lots of laughter.”

Judith, Patient
