Why your support matters

Loneliness and social isolation can deeply affect people’s physical and mental health and have a significant impact on their quality of life. Sadly, for those living with a chronic or life-limiting illness and their carers, the effects can be even greater.

They might find themselves shut off from their community due to a new diagnosis or worsening of their condition, feel like others will not be able to relate to their situation and in some cases, feel like they have nothing left to live for.

At a time when government funding to hospices is contracting, the need for our services is increasing, which is why we have launched an appeal to raise vital funds to expand our community outreach.

How your support can help

Your support of our Winter Appeal will help us to expand our community outreach, in turn helping us to combat loneliness and isolation experienced by those living with a life-limiting illness and their carers.

  • £10 could cover the travel expenses of a community befriender who will visit patients at home, providing a source of companionship and helping to reduce isolation.
  • £35 could fund an at-home visit from a community nurse who can provide pain and symptom management as well as emotional and practical support to patients and their carers.
  • £50 could help to fund our free ambulance service, safely transporting patients to and from the hospice, ensuring that they do not become cut off from the community.

“St John’s helped us realise we weren’t alone.”

“The prospect of facing your illness alone is incredibly daunting, it's isolating.

St John’s helped us realise we weren’t alone and that there was this amazing community we were a part of and that we could be supported by."

Veronica, Patient
