Our Area

ImageLondon is a city of many cultures and many faiths, with a population from all over the world. Consequently, we have the exciting challenge of providing services to an extraordinarily diverse community of approximately 1.5 million people.

St. John's Hospice cares for people in central and north west London, an area with a population of approximately 1.5 million people.

Our catchment area contains enormous socio-economic differences; Stonebridge in Brent is ranked as the 3rd most deprived London wards on the Income Scale measure, whilst Knightsbridge and Belgravia is the 2nd least deprived. The 2007 Index of Multiple Deprivation ranks five of the seven local authorities that we provide services to as being in the 25% most deprived local authorities in England. Islington ranks as the 8th most deprived borough in the country.

The latest demographic projections from the Greater London Authority (2007 Round Ethnic Group Population Projections) demonstrate the ethnic diversity of the area that we serve.  Whilst the majority of the population we serve is White (67%), this includes significant numbers of people from non-UK backgrounds.  Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea have the highest proportion of people from Other White backgrounds in England, mostly made up of European and American born people.

We have contracts with seven NHS Primary Care Trusts, although not all of our services are available in each area:
  • Westminster - all of our services are available to the registered population of Westminster, however people living in the far west and south of Westminster may be referred to the Community Nursing teams based at the Pembridge Centre or Trinity Hospice.
  • Brent - we provide in-patient services, day services, hospice@home and the lymphoedema service.
  • Camden - we provide in-patient services and day services.
  • Islington - we provide in-patient services.
  • Barnet - we provide day services.
  • Kensington & Chelsea - we provide the hospice@home service.
  • Hammersmith & Fulham - we provide in-patient services and day services for people living with HIV/AIDS.
