light up a life

Organising your own event

Fundraising events can be as small or as extravagent as you like. Whether you just want to individually take up the challenge of a sponsored silence or you get your whole office to attend a Valentine Ball, follow the below tips to ensuring success of your event.

Why not start by getting some inspiration from our A-Z of Fundraising Ideas!

  • Try to set up a fundraising team with regular meetings, to make the event as easy as possible to organise - many hands make light work!
  • Brainstorm to come up with an event that will be both fun and rewarding.
  • Set a date for your event.
  • Set a budget - how much do you expect to raise? How much will you need to spend? What will you need to charge people in order to make a profit?
  • You may find it helpful to do a breakdown of actions and costs. Use our event planner to help you.
  • Don't forget to ask permission to fundraise - especially if you are planning to do a collection in a public place.
  • Please email us to let us know if you are fundraising for us - we are always delighted to hear from our supporters!
  • Please let us know before you contact a large corporation or a celebrity, to avoid crossed wires - we may have contacted them before, or be about to contact them
  • We can provide you with sponsorship forms or you can download them direct from this site.
  • If you are a UK taxpayer St John's can make an extra 28p for every £1 you raise with Gift Aid.
  • Advertising and publicity. Use our straight forward tips on writing press releases to help you get the most from your publicity.
