Fireman Tackles 4,000 Miles For Hospice

DRocheSince June 9 of this year, Darryl Roche has been cycling for two hours a day, every day. That is 12 weeks non-stop, 168 hours, and approximately 2,772 miles in total so far. A major achievement – and he is not going to stop. Darryl will continue cycling until 25th October. By this point, his total mileage will be close to an incredible 4,000 miles.

Darryl is doing this to raise money for St John's Hospice. His grandmother, Frances Goater, passed away under the care of our nurses on 9 June 2011 and Darryl was touched by the care his grandmother received. He calls the Hospice a place that gives 'peace and comfort to people with terminal illnesses.' Darryl bravely began his cycling challenge the date his grandmother passed away and will stop on her birthday, 25 October. He is undertaking this challenge at his local gym and also at the base fire station where he works.

Darryl is a fire fighter for the Paddington Fire Station White Watch, and a local resident. The Hospice still continues to support Darryl's grandfather, whom he thinks the world of. Darryl says 'it would bring a great smile to my grandfather's face by completing this task.'

Darryl aims to raise £2,000 for the hospice. That is just 50p per mile. If you would like to support Darryl, and help him reach his target, please visit his JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/darrylscyclechallenge.

BUPA Lends A Hand To Hospice

BUPA team

A team of 23 volunteers from BUPA UK’s Procurement Team joined the St John's Hospice staff to give a helping hand.

On Tuesday the 23rd of September, this enthusiastic group put their all in to a day of volunteering to clean and paint our Hospice Charity Shop stock room. They sanded the doors and window frames, did a deep clean and gave the place a lick of paint.

Elsa, our Shop Manager said “it was great to have the help of such a big team. They did in one day what it would take weeks for us to do”.

As well as giving the shop a make over, some of the volunteers took their smiling faces to the streets to do collections for the Hospice. Groups of two went to different Tesco stores around central London to collect money from shoppers and passers by. Donations were generous and shoppers were keen to donate when they saw the friendly BUPA faces and the St John’s Hospice logo.

We are so grateful for their hard work and enthusiasm today and we hope BUPA will come back to volunteer with us soon!

Hospice Nominated for Second Award

Dragon Awards

We are very excited to announce that we have been nominated for a second Award this year. The Dragon Awards recognise community engagement in London. They receive hundreds of high quality applications from companies and charities in the capital each year. We are proud to have been nominated in the Community Partners Category which awards the impact charity’s and businesses have on the local community.

It is our partnership with John Lewis Oxford Street that has been recognised once again as an outstanding example of a mutually beneficial partnership. Our work together ensures our charity shop is hugely successful and we are able to provide those all important “personal touches” for our patients.

We will hear whether we have won the award in October and all have our fingers crossed!

Local Estate Agent Sponsors Cirque du St John’s

greene maida vale2

Local estate agent, Greene & Co. is sponsoring this year’s annual auction event, Cirque du St John’s, which takes place at the Café de Paris on September 11th and they are also helping the Charity secure high value auction prizes.

Since opening their first office in West Hampstead, Greene & Co. has been providing North and West London with a professional and award-winning service. Thirty years on, the business has grown but the same personal level of service remains.

The network now comprises eleven separate entities giving Greene & Co. superb coverage of the capital: seven offices serving Belsize Park, Clerkenwell, Crouch End, Kensal Rise, Kentish Town (coming soon), Maida Vale and West Hampstead; Urban Spaces, specialising in unique properties; a New Homes team focusing on taking new-build schemes to market; and Residential Developments & Investments, specialising in mixed-use opportunities; across all London postcodes.

This high density of offices, particularly in North and West London, means that agents have access to a large database of buyers and tenants looking for property across many of the same locations and we have a large portfolio of properties to offer for sale or to let.

To find out more about Greene & Co. or buying, selling, letting or renting visit their website at www.greene.co.uk. You can also keep up-to-date with the latest local news, events, offers and market updates inside their Compass magazine which can be viewed here
