Hospice Care Week is Here

Nurses HCW

This week, we are celebrating Hospice Care Week and we would love you to join us!

Hospice Care Week is about highlighting the urgent and growing need for hospice care in the UK and we are giving you the chance to take part in a variety of fundraising events throughout the week.

The specialist care provided by St John’s Hospice extends beyond the home-away-from-home setting on-site. Through our Community Team, Hospice@Home, Bereavement and Social Work services, we offer extensive support in the community for patients and their families at home.

Why not kick-start this week and join the voice of over 100 hospices, their staff and supporters by spreading the message via Facebook and Twitter? Download one of our social media cards and tweet your photos to us @stjohnshospice using #hospicecareweek. Share how dedicated staff and volunteers connect to bring the best possible end of life care to patient and their families.

Whether you get involved by posting a photo, joining us for one of our events or fundraising in your own way, your support will enable people to continue connecting with one another and St John’s Hospice.

Enter Our School's Christmas Card Competition

Swiss Cottage

We would like to feature one design by a student at a local primary or secondary school as part of our official Christmas card selection. The winner of our competition will have their design professionally printed and sold in aid of St John’s on our website, at our Christmas events, in our charity shop, as well as in the Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth. We also invite schools to sell our Christmas cards in-house.

We had great success with the school design chosen in 2014: Swiss Cottage School sold Olzan’s Snowman (pictured above) to parents and raised almost £100 from the sales.

Nicole Marks, a teacher from the school, said: ‘It has been a pleasure to work with St John’s and I know that both the students and their parents have loved the Christmas Cards. It was great to engage our students with the Hospice all while raising vital funds.’

To enter, all you have to do is complete the form below and return it with your entries to Alice Windsor, Fundraising Department, St John’s Hospice, 60 Grove End Road, London NW8 9NH.

The deadline for entries is Friday October 23. The staff at St John’s Hospice will then choose 8 finalists. Finalists will be informed soon after this deadline and the winner will be chosen by the public through voting on our Facebook page.

The winner will feature on the website, in our monthly e-newsletter, on social media and in our magazine, The Carer. We will also arrange a special presentation of your card at our Christmas Fayre on Sunday December 6 in front of fellow students, teachers and family.

Celebrating Cirque du St John’s Record Grand Total

Cirque 15 Fire

Our 4th annual Cirque du St John’s was hosted at Café de Paris for the second year running and raised over £100,000.

Over 200 of our key loyal supporters enjoyed a luxury evening. After a champagne reception and the opportunity to bid at our Silent Auction lots, attendees were astonished by an opening aerial silk and burlesque singing acts before enjoying a Parisian three-course dinner.

Live performances then captivated our guests including a fire eater and a hula hoop act before the excitement of the Live Auction, which included a private plane ride to France for lunch and a week-long stay in a Tuscan villa.

At this year’s gathering, one fundraising focus was to ask our supporters to sponsor Christmas Day as part of our Pay for a Day appeal. It costs £13,351 to run all our services for 24 hours. This special lot raised £28,000 alone thanks to the generosity in the room.

The auction went live online last week and we invited everyone to take part for a chance to win one of our luxury lots. Thank you to everyone who took part. The lucky winners will be contacted in due course.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all the individuals and companies that attended, as well as those who donated prizes to our Live and Silent Auctions.

Mark Thomas, Director of Fundraising, said: "This fabulous event has now raised almost £250,000 since it was started 4 years ago. The support from these dinners means so much to our patients. Thank you so much to everyone."

Countdown to Cirque

CAFE9

Our annual gala auction dinner, Cirque du St John’s, is just one week away and we are very excited about the most anticipated event in our calendar.

It will take place next Thursday September 24 at Café de Paris in London’s West End. In keeping with the world famous venue, expect luxury food and drink, astonishing live acts and performances, as well as live and silent auctions. We are expecting over 200 key supporters and corporate partners to join us for this wonderful evening all in aid of St John’s Hospice.

The lots include a week-long holiday on private island location, Jumby Bay, a Chanel No. 5 gift bag, bespoke handmade jewellery by Hatton Garden Jewellers and many more to be revealed.

Anyone can bid online for the chance to win one of our fantastic lots and help raise more than last year’s total of £75,000. This event is more successful year on year so please take part and support our patients and their families.

It is only through hosting events such as this that we are able to raise over £1.7million a year to provide our services completely free of charge.

Do Something Legendary for Remember A Charity Week

Remember A Charity Week logo jpg

This week, the government is encouraging 400,000 civil servants to leave a charitable gift in their Will, in support of this year’s Remember A Charity Week.

The Week (September 7-13) launched on Monday to celebrate the role and impact of legacy givers.

The main message is that every day people do extreme things to raise money for charities like St John’s Hospice – from skydiving to running a marathon. But you don’t have to go to extremes to do something amazing to help your favourite charity, because leaving a gift in your Will is legendary enough.  It makes such a big difference to the people that we care for.

We simply couldn’t do the work we do without gifts in Wills. They are so important to us because they help us plan our future care so that we can continue to provide free care and support to our patients and their families.

If you want to do something legendary for St John’s Hospice, click here to find out more about leaving a gift in your Will and the difference it will make alternatively, email Katherine or call her on 020 7806 4012.

On-site Bake Off Kick-starts Bake It! Week

Bake It 1

Bake It 2

Creative and delicious bakes were to be found at the Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth on Monday as we launched our ‘Bake It! Week’ with our very own Bake-Off competition and bake sale in aid of St John’s Hospice!

Staff and volunteers baked some absolutely fantastic treats, and judges Chef Stephen Rey and Deputy Sister Louise Evans, had a real challenge picking winners. The winning bakers were Hayley Appleford in the best tasting category for her Chinese Vanilla Sponge Roll, Angela Miller in the best presented category for her amazingly decorated Chocolate Orange Cake, and Star Bake went to Holly Miles for her Salted Caramel Cupcakes.

We would like to thank M&S and Rock Bakehouse for donating some fantastic prizes for our winners, and to everyone who so kindly contributed to the bake sale which raised £165. This could buy two weeks worth of clinical equipment for one of our nurses working in the community!

If you would like to get creative with baking and host your own bake sale, coffee morning, tea party or bake-off competition for ‘Bake It! Week’, please get in touch with us by email or call 020 7806 4074.

St Clare's Nurse To Trek Great Wall Of China

Lucy Rybin GWOC

Lucy Rybin, a St Clare's Ward nurse in the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth, will be getting out her walking boots and jetting across the globe this October to take on the challenge of a lifetime to raise vital funds for St John's Hospice - the Great Wall of China!

Lucy said: "I was first introduced to St John's Hospice in 1994 when a dear friend passed away. I soon began working for the Renal Unit in the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth and have done so for the part 17 years. The Hospice and the Hospital mean a lot to me and as this year the Renal Unit will sadly close its doors, I thought it was the time to set myself a big challenge. This 80km trekking challenge is going to be physically demanding as it will follow old sections of the Great Wall, as well as a lot of steps! I have to raise £2,700, so please be generous and dig deep to support the Hospice and keep me going on my adventure."

If you would like to support Lucy and help her reach her fundraising target, please visit her fundraising page here.

Click to find out more about challenge events or, like Lucy, organise your own event in aid of the Hospice.
