Christmas Fayre Raises Over £25,000

CFayre 2015

Our Christmas Fayre last Sunday has raised £25,000 for our patients and families. Hosted for the fourth year on St John’s Wood High Street, our annual event is always packed with Christmas fun and this year was no exception. We were delighted with how many people turned out on a wet morning to support the Hospice and get in the Christmas mood.

From plenty of gifts and home accessories, clothing and jewellery through to a selection of delicious food, the High Street hosted more than 80 stallholders from in and around London to tempt visitors.

Meanwhile children were spoilt for choice as the fayre flaunted donkey rides and many fairground rides. There were queues to meet and greet Peppa Pig and to see Father Christmas in Santa’s Grotto for the majority of the day.

The Christmas Fayre 2015 was sponsored by Seddons, Lord’s, Winkworth, Barclays, Yasmeen and Chestertons and many other businesses also gave generously to the raffle, Santa’s Grotto and Peppa Pig.

“This is a fantastic total,’ explains Director of Fundraising Mark Thomas. ‘From the committee of volunteers, stallholders and business sponsors, through to the visitors themselves, we’re very grateful to everyone for their continued support.”

Our next big event will be Light Up A Life next Wednesday December 9. This cherished annual occasion provides a moment amidst the Christmas rush to remember loved ones no longer with us at a short inclusive service. For more information and make you dedication onlne click here.

Our two-day Paddington Christmas Fayre will be held at Paddington Recreation Ground on the weekend of December 12th and 13th.

Join St John’s this Sunday December 6 2015 for our annual Christmas Fayre full of festive fun and entertainment. The event is being held on St John’s Wood High Street from 11am – 6pm and every year it is a great way to get into the festive mood, tick some items off Christmas lists and support our Hospice at the same time. Entry is FREE.

Stalls will sell a tempting array of delicious food and Christmas gifts including beauty products, jewellery, books, scarfs and homeware. There will be lots of fun for children too, with fairground rides, donkey rides and even the chance to meet Peppa Pig. St John’s is delighted that Father Christmas has also found time in his busy schedule to visit our fayre and meet children in his magical Santa’s Grotto.

Seasonal refreshments including mulled wine will be available and performances from local community groups and schools including a rock choir will bring the Christmas spirit to St John’s Wood High Street. There will also be a special presentation for all the finalists of our School's Christmas Card Competition in front of their families and friends.

China Trek Raises £3,500

Lucy Rybin Trek

Lucy was introduced to St John’s when her friend passed away in 1994. She soon started working for the Renal Unit in the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth, where she stayed for 17 years. When it was announced that the Renal Unit would be closing its doors, Lucy decided to set herself this big challenge.

Last month, she successfully trekked an incredible 80km for St John’s to one of the most recognisable attractions in the world and alongside her training Lucy has done some fantastic fundraising. Her grand total is now more than £3,500 and you can still support Lucy through her fundraising page.

Lucy said: “The trek was so well organised and it was amazing to walk parts of the wall in more remote areas. Some days were tougher than others but I made it! It was also wonderful to experience the Chinese culture – I loved the whole trip.”

We would like to say a big thank you to Lucy and all her supporters. Through her efforts, she has raised enough funds to run our Community and Hospice@Home services for 24 hours. This will make a big difference to the lives of patients just like her dear late friend.

If you would also like to organise your own event in aid of St Johns, we would be happy to assist you. To find out more about challenge events, do contact Alice on 020 7806 4074 or by email.

Lucy’s trek has been such a success we are looking for adventurers to take part next year. If you are interested in finding out more about the China Trek, click here.

Summary of Hospice Care Week at St John's

HCW Collage

Last week, we joined hundreds of other hospices in the UK and celebrated Hospice Care Week to raise awareness of the services we provide. Here is a recap of our week.

The theme for this year was ‘Connecting Care,’ highlighting how hospices connect people with each other. Throughout the week, we took the opportunity to let our staff, patients and supporters tell their story using social media cards. The prompt on the card was: ‘I’m connected to hospice care because…’

Our staff said:

‘I want to help people.’

‘Because I care.’

‘I enjoy sharing my knowledge.’

‘I want to make a difference.’

‘I love doing art therapy with the patients.’

‘…of our culture of compassionate care. It is a rewarding, fulfilling and meaningful job.’

‘I get to work with wonderful people who inspire me everyday.’

Our volunteer said:

‘They are just wonderful.’

Our patients said:

‘I have been coming to the Day Centre for 5 weeks and I am completely hooked. I enjoy exercise classes, massage and lunch. Wonderful.’

‘They help and support us. We get fantastic reflexology and acupuncture.’

‘Where would we be without the Day Centre?’

‘Without all the support from this hospice I don’t know where I would be.’

‘I’m grateful for the Day Centre at St John’s  – I enjoy the meal, the treatments are excellent and the staff kind and helpful. Also exercise setup with Diego and of course other patients because of their experiences and stories.’

‘Gets me out of the house. Help me with my artwork, support me day by day. Always helpful with problems.’

‘It puts me in touch with some really helpful and caring people and allows me to get out of the house and meet new people in a friendly atmosphere. Also really good food!’

In addition, some events during the week were a quiz night at local pub, The Salt House, collections and our ‘Funky Headwear for Hospice Care’ day.

Funky Headwear participants included patients and staff at the Hospice, as well as Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill, Starcom Mediavest Group and Hyman’s Robertson. A team of runners from Hyman’s Robertson also ran the Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon to support us. A big thank you is due to all our corporate supporters!

At the weekend, Westbourne Park Bus Garage was bustling with visitors during an Open Day held in aid of St John’s, kindly donating 100% of the proceeds. We would like to extend a special thanks to Tower Transit, Corgi and Transport for London for all their hard work.

We would also like to thank everyone took part in our events or shared their story on social media. By joining in you play a crucial role in raising awareness about hospice care.
