Veolia Westminster awarded Gold Leaf

The team at Veolia Westminster have generously supported all our Fayres for the past 3 years. Through providing free bins, rubbish collections and staff to keep the fayres clean and tidy they have helped us to save thousands of pounds.

To say thank you for their generosity, we have awarded them a Gold Leaf on our giving tree. The Gold Leaf recognises donations over and above £5,000.

Tom Elmer, whose father in law was cared for by the Hospice, leads Veolia’s support of St John’s. He said “we are very happy to help in anyway we can and thank you very much for the leaf”.

Through helping the Hospice to save money, Veolia have helped ensure that all profit from our Fayres directly supports the 3000 patients and their families who we help every year.

If you would be interested in a leaf on our Giving Tree, please do get in touch.

Arnold House School raise over £600 for St John's Hospice!

Arnold House School

On June 14, Alex Murray-Bruce and a group of friends from Arnold House School organsied a veryspecial concert for St John’s Hospice in our beautiful on site Chapel.

Alex decided to hold the concert because he thought fundraising, "was a good thing to do, it helps the Hospice grow which might improve care.  I saw my Dad do a concert and it raised £7,000, I found that very impressive.  I thought if I fundraise, I have all my friends who will donate – well hopefully their parents will."  In fact, Alex and his friends raised over £600 to support the care of our patients.

Alex and his friends played a variety of solos and group pieces.  Alex’s favourite song was by Leon Hammond, Rainbow.  He has played the cornet for four years and said that getting his friends together to do the concert was, ‘pretty easy, they all like to perform and stand out from the crowd.  We do a few concerts a year mostly all from the orchestra.’  He decided to tell all his friends about the concert and had help from Mrs Du Pont, the head of music at Arnold House School who are long standing supporters of the Hospice. But for Alex and his friends, this was the first time they had organised a concert to raise funds. ‘I was very nervous but it was really good and over in a second! I would like to do it again… It felt really nice to see everyone perform.  A dream come true.’

We would like to thank Alex and his friends, Mrs Du Pont, Arnold House School and all those involved who helped make the concert a success for St John’s Hospice.  Thank you to Alex and his friends for their enthusiasm and hard work.

St John's Hospice 'A Modern Apothecary'

At this years RHS Chelsea Flower Show we teamed up with award winning horticulturalist Jekka McVicar with a vision of bringing her stunning creation 'A Modern Apothecary' back to St John's Hospice. The showcase was a huge success with visits to our garden from Her Majesty The Queen, Princess Anne and Maureen Lipman to name just a few. The garden received an excellent Silver-Gilt award from the RHS judges and proved extremely popular with visitors to the show.

Why do we need a new garden?

There are currently very limited outside spaces for patients and their families to enjoy. The only accesible area is a small space towards the back of our Day Centre. The new garden will be located at the back of our Inpatient Unit and patients will be able to see it from their beds.

A new garden would transforn our green spaces at the front of St John's. Often our patients are too unwell to be far from our nurses and very much miss the simple pleasures we take for granted. Fresh air, plants, herbs and flowers usually enjoyed slowly drift out of reach for our patients as they become too ill to go for walks of enjoy caring for their own gardens. As the Hospice is based in Central London, many of our patients live in small flats and do not have their own outside space at home.

Below you can watch the creation of the garden and the excellent coverage it received for St John's Hospice.

Marks & Spencer raise £1890 from their annual Bake Sale!

The M&S Finance team in Paddington have held their third annual bake sale for St John’s. This year they had a royal theme and all cakes, bakes and sweet treats were judged on if they were 'fit for a Queen'. Every year, the entries get better and this year staff pulled out all the stops to make the day a huge success. A union jack rainbow cake, Kate and Will’s wedding cake and a classic Victoria sponge were just some of the incredible entries created by staff this year.

Jump for St John's like Jumana

Jumana Skydive

Last Sunday Jumana Shamma completed a 10,000ft Tandem Skydive for St John’s and we would like to say a huge well done and thank you to her and all her supporters!

Jumana has raised almost £500 and you can still support her through her fundraising page: https://fundraiseforcharity.everydayhero.com/uk/jumana

Jumana said: ‘I thought about it and actually heroic or not, this kind of bravery does not come a fraction close to the bravery of those facing terminal illness – they are more brave than I can ever imagine to be and those working at the Hospice even more so! So I got super excited to raise money for a great cause, because when you do it for the first time you will not remember why you decided that free falling 10,000ft high in the sky was such a good idea! And what makes sure you go through it is all the people who supported you and sponsored you to make it to the airfield. Thanks to everyone and St John’s Hospice, because it was such an amazing experience…’

If you are interested in taking on a skydive like Jumana, any of our other challenge events or even organise your own event, please contact Alice by This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or on 020 7806 4074.
